The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has expressed concern over a series of international drug seizures linked to Ghana, warning that the country’s reputation is being damaged.His comment followed the seizure by French customs authorities of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine, valued at about €225 million, from a container of plastic waste that arrived at the northern port of Dunkirk from Ghana.
The cocaine was concealed in the container, which was partly destined for Antwerp, Belgium, with French authorities investigating the suspected criminal network behind the shipment.
“It is becoming one too many. Our image is sinking,” Rev. Fordjour said in an interview on Channel One News on Friday, September 11.
He said the latest seizure was part of a worrying pattern of large-scale drug consignments linked to Ghana, warning that repeated seizures were damaging the country’s international reputation and reinforcing perceptions of Ghana as “a cocaine coast” and a territory tolerant of drug trafficking.
Rev. Fordjour questioned why major drug seizures linked to Ghana had not been followed by high-profile arrests and prosecutions of those responsible.
He referred to previous drug seizures, including a large methamphetamine shipment intercepted by Australian authorities in April 2026, as well as other cocaine-related cases he said he had raised concerns about.
“The least of our worries are the small quantities that NACOC puts out there,” he said, arguing that Ghana needed to confront the networks behind major international drug shipments.
The Assin South MP questioned whether investigations had led to the arrest and prosecution of those behind the shipments, asking: “What is worrying is that you have these high-profile cases, but where are the high-profile prosecutions?”
He called for greater accountability and investigations into the networks responsible for the high-profile consignments, warning that repeated seizures could further damage Ghana’s international reputation.
