Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has said the government’s New Economy programme will focus on sectors with the capacity to create jobs on a large scale.
Dr Forson said the government would deliberately deploy its spending power and fiscal policy to drive investment into those sectors and open them up to Ghanaians seeking opportunities.
“The New Economy is coming to create jobs and build prosperity for Ghanaians,” he said.
He said the programme would begin with an assessment of where the greatest employment potential lies, after which government resources would be directed accordingly.
“We will identify the sectors of the economy that can create jobs at scale. Government will then use its spending power and fiscal policy to create the space for people to enter those sectors and create jobs,” Dr Forson said.
The finance minister explained that the approach is designed to ensure that government spending supports productive sectors, promotes enterprise, and delivers jobs for Ghanaians.
The comments signal an intention to tie fiscal decisions more closely to employment outcomes, with public expenditure positioned as a tool for stimulating private sector activity rather than an end in itself.
Dr Forson did not name the specific sectors the programme will prioritise, nor did he give a timeline for the identification exercise or indicate how much funding would be committed to it.
The New Economy programme has featured in the government’s recent framing of its economic agenda, with job creation presented as the central measure of whether its fiscal choices are working.
