The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, with support from the Ghana Armed Forces and the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), has begun evacuating waste from the Jamestown landfill site to the Adepa Waste Centre at Nsawam.
The exercise forms part of the National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise aimed at clearing accumulated waste from selected landfill sites across the country.
Ahead of the evacuation, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, visited the Jamestown site with his team to assess the extent of the waste accumulation and determine the trucks and heavy-duty equipment required for the exercise.
The assessment was intended to facilitate the deployment of the necessary logistics to remove the waste efficiently.
The Jamestown waste heap, located near the polluted Korle Lagoon, has accumulated over several decades and remains a major sanitation challenge in Accra.
The latest evacuation is expected to help clear the accumulated waste and improve sanitation conditions around the Jamestown and Korle Lagoon areas.
