Ayariga, Agyeman-Rawlings confirmed as ministers after vetting
Parliament has approved the nominations of Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.
The approvals were granted on Thursday, August 27, 2026, after both nominees appeared before the Appointments Committee earlier in the day. They were assessed on competence, experience, and suitability for their respective portfolios as part of the constitutional requirement to vet presidential nominees..
The House endorsed the nominations through a voice vote, with the Speaker declaring that the “Ayes have it.” Announcing the decision, the Speaker emphasised that the approval was in line with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates parliamentary scrutiny of ministerial nominees.
Mahama Ayariga, a seasoned legislator and former Majority Leader, was nominated by President John Dramani Mahama to head the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs. His new role places him at the forefront of government’s decentralisation and local governance agenda.
Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, also an MP and daughter of former President Jerry John Rawlings, will lead the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology. Her portfolio covers critical areas including environmental protection, scientific research, technological innovation, and policies to address climate and ecological challenges.
