Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has assured residents and property owners in Osu that the government will not indiscriminately demolish buildings to make way for the proposed coastal road project from Tema to Winneba.
He said government is working with architects to find a solution that will improve traffic circulation within the community while protecting buildings considered historically significant.

“No one is just going to go through Osu and demolish everything just because we want to build a road. We are sensitive to things like that,” Governs Kwame Agbodza said.
He made these remarks at the 2026 World Architecture Day celebration organised by the Ghana Institute of Architects on the theme, “Housing is a Human Right. Build It.”

The Minister said the government recognises the role of architects in planning communities, particularly when major road infrastructure projects have implications for existing settlements.
“Roads are not basically lines paved with concrete or asphalt for people to drive from point A to point B. Along that stretch are communities, our lives, our farms and everything,” he stated.
Governs Kwame Agbodza explained that the government’s long-standing plan to construct a road from Tema to Winneba along the coastal corridor already has an established alignment, with a 500-metre stretch around Osu presenting the main challenge.
He said the government has brought in professionals to help determine the best way to address the section without unnecessarily destroying the community.
“I believe that the involvement of architects in whatever we do will help. That is why this year many of you who are senior would have known that it has always been the desire of government to do the road from Tema all the way to Winneba on the beach side. In fact, the alignment existed.
“The only bottleneck is a 500-meter stretch around Osu, and I have been reading all your comments, and sometimes I get to feel that it is interesting that when you are out there, you feel everybody who is a decision-maker is blind, or we are inconsiderate about what we do.
“I read every comment, and I take them seriously. As a matter of fact, we brought in Architect Deban to help us navigate that,” Governs Kwame Agbodza mentioned.
