President John Dramani Mahama has granted presidential pardon to 863 convicted persons as part of activities marking Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary.
The President exercised the prerogative of mercy under Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution, following consultations with the Council of State.
According to a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the gesture was intended to commemorate the milestone anniversary with an act of mercy and national reflection.
The directive has been forwarded to the relevant state institutions to take immediate steps to implement the President’s decision.
Breakdown of Beneficiaries:
819 first offenders have been granted outright release.
13 convicts aged 70 years and above have also been freed.
6 seriously ill persons have been released on health grounds.
11 death row inmates have had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment.
6 life sentences have been reduced to 20‑year definite terms.
2 persons were released under special recommendations.
3 convicts were pardoned following petitions.
Another 3 beneficiaries fall under other categories.
